Home gardeners and farmers feud with grasshoppers overwhelming their plants

CAMERON - This year's grasshopper population explosion is the result of a warm spring and moisture at the right time, said Bell County Agent Dirk Aaron.

"Some farmers say there are huge grasshopper populations out in the fields," Aaron said.

Hay meadows, as well as improved and native pasture are favorite targets of these mean, green, eating machines.

"Some farmers called me and said they saw grasshoppers feeding on corn silks," Aaron said.

Thus, fields and landscapes that managed to stay alive during the record-setting drought of 2008-09, are being gobbled up by the summertime insect scourge.

In neighboring Milam County, grasshopper grief is growing, said Jon Gersbach, Milam County extension agent.

This region of Texas is home to four kinds of the greedy insects, who view lawns and gardens as an oasis in the desert. Milam County residents are seeing all four kinds.
