Changes in store for Wildflower charity classic

It’s August. Doesn’t the Dr. Ralph Wilson Jr. Wildflower Charity Classic golf tournament usually take place in October?

Yes, it has for the last several years.

“But the Classic is in a time of transition,” said Donnie Lucas, tournament coordinator.

Event organizers are wanting the event to take place earlier in the year. Their first move was to schedule the 2007 Classic for Aug. 31.

“And by 2009, the plan will be to have the (Wilson Classic) take place the day after the Masters Tournament is over,” Lucas said.

Marking the start of the golfing season, the Masters Tournament is a worldwide professional golf tournament that occurs every April in Augusta, Ga.

“So that means we’re looking at having (the Wilson Classic) on the second Monday of April - starting in 2009,” Lucas said. “That will be the new permanent day of the tournament.”

The revised schedule has the potential to increase tournament participation.

“There’ll be more time to golf, a set in the morning and a set in the afternoon,” Lucas said.

Available golfing slots will be doubled.

“And that will be good because for the last couple of years, the tournament’s been packed,” Lucas said.
