She takes the top leadership position after fulfilling the duties of second vice president for 2007-08 and after serving several terms as event chair.
“I’m eager to get started as president,” Ms. Curry said. “I look forward to working with the community and the Federation’s member clubs.”
The Federation is composed of about 25 member clubs that vary in topic from gardening to reading and range in membership from 10 to 50.
Mrs. Curry’s calendar is already packed.
“There’s so much to look forward to,” she said.
The annual Fall Garden Party Mum Sale will launch the City Federation’s new year of activity on Sept. 3 at the City Federation Clubhouse, 219 King Circle in Temple.
“We’re hoping for a great turnout,” Curry said, explaining that proceeds from the mum sale help the club generate revenue for its community service projects.
The Federation’s next venture will be the annual Fashion Show Brunch, set for Oct. 9. The event is one of the group’s main fundraisers.
“It supports two of our largest projects, the community grants and scholarships for East Bell County seniors,” Ms. Curry said.
Each year the City Federation Foundation awards between $5,000 and $8,000 in community grants to area organizations for service projects, and it distributes $1,500 scholarships to eligible graduating seniors.
Remaining revenue goes to support the Federation’s ongoing projects like supporting the Salvation Army and the Temple Police Department.
“A new community project this year will be to collect small stuffed animals to give through the Belton Senior Center to the military for use in Iraq,” Ms. Curry said.
As for the spring, the new president said the Federation is looking to its annual Barclay Arts Competition and bazaar.
“Our Spring Bazaar is an old project with a new time line,” Ms. Curry said. “We have scheduled our bazaar for March 10 instead of November. We felt that the change would give the community a new spring activity.”
Plans are also in the works to expand the Federation’s historic Bell County Authors Collection, which is housed at the Temple Public Library. Ms. Curry said to be included, area authors with recently published works should contact the Federation at 254-778-1270.
