A pair of out-of-state saddle bronc riders equaled the mark established by Todd Rangel of College Station on Thursday with 83-point rides. Colorado cowboy Tate Owens and Tyler Corrington of Minnesota posted their numbers on horses named Calvin Kline and Precision, respectively, to highlight a successful night of riding.
Eight of the 12 saddle bronc riders managed to score. Wes Burns of Stephenville turned in a 75 on Fox An Dice to move into the top five. Wyoming’s Raytom Meiers rode Dirty Harry to a 74.
The bareback riding competition now has two cowboys sharing the lead with only tonight’s go-round remaining. Colorado’s Zach Curran stayed aboard Buck Wheat for an 83 to match Frenchman Evan Jayne from Thursday.
Seven of the nine bareback riders scored. Ryan Little of Lake Charles, La., moved into fourth with a 75 on Lock & Load and Jared Smith of Ranger was right behind with a 73 on Firecracker.
The lead remains the same in the steer wrestling, but second place is packed tight. Glen Clark of Granbury and Justin Blaine Davis of Bartonville both finished in 4.1 seconds, tying the mark of Wichita Falls’ Mickey Gee from Thursday. Azle’s Seth Morgan is in a three-way tie for fifth with Kyle Callaway and John Hill after a 4.2 time.
No pair of team ropers could reach the 4.4-second time of Tee Woolman and J.W. Borrego, but Colby Schneemann and Matt Kasner combined for a 4.6 to move into a tie for third with two other teams - Jake Kropik/Cole Davison and Speed Williams/Allen Bach. Cody Odell of Como and Twister Cain of Gonzales paired for a 4.8.
Cade Swor of Chico was the bright spot in an otherwise lackluster night of tie-down roping. Swor finished in 10.2 seconds to move into a tie for fifth, still well behind the 9.5 mark set by Charlotte’s Cash Weir.
The stock provided by the Sammy Andrews Rodeo Company got the best of the bullriders. Only two out of 13 hung on for the required eight seconds.
Lake Charles’ Josh Barentine scored a 79 on Cash Money to move into sixth. Cory Melton of Tolar scored a 77 on Low Rider. J.W. Harris is still well in front with his 90 from Thursday. In revamped official standings, Cameron Bland of Glen Flora is second at 84, Douglas Duncan of Alvin is third at 83 and Logan Knibbe of Rockdale is fourth at 81.
In barrel racing, Idaho’s Megan McLeod slipped into sixth place with a ride of 15.79 seconds for the best effort of the evening. None of the other nine racers broke the 16-second barrier.
Salado’s Brady Cosper, 11, had the best mark in the 12-and-under barrel racing in a time of 16.99 seconds. Liza Spurlock, 12, of Salado came in at 17.28 and 9-year-old Dustin Jones of Heidenheimer finished in 18.53. Eight-year-old Kinley Ann Urbanousky of Eddy still leads with a 16.83.
The rodeo’s final performance begins tonight at 7:30 on “Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night."
