Officials at Scott and White Memorial Hospital reported Monday that more than 100 people participated Saturday in the hospital's emergency blood drive.Cindy Glover, chief technologist for blood donor services, said that when she arrived at work Saturday morning people were lined up in the hallway. All seating in the hallway and in the waiting room was filled, she said."We collected 94 units Saturday," said Ms. Glover. "I estimate that 95 percent of the units drawn was type "O" blood.Hospital officials had reported Friday that the shortage of type "O" blood had reached emergency status. Two patients at the hospital recovering from surgery needed "O" type, they said."Most people who donated blood commented about the front page article in the Telegram," said Ms. Glover. sportsBelton's first-year swimming program will have 13 swimmers compete at the Class 4A Region IV championships on Feb. 8-9 at the Texas Swim Center in Austin. The Tigers competed at the District 14-4A meet on Saturday in Burnet. Those placing in the top six advanced to regionals."I am so proud of the kids," Belton coach Sally Law said. "They made a commitment in August and all their time and effort has paid off. We are very excited about the upcoming years and the growth of the program. We have kids with tremendous potential."Three Tigers will compete in individual events. They are Zack Hissey (200-yard individual medley, 100 butterfly), Jen Moen (500 freestyle) and Ryan Anderson (100 breaststroke). Belton will also send five relay teams to regionals. The boys teams that qualified were the 200 medley, the 200 free and 400 free. On the girls side, the 200 medley and 400 free qualified. The members of the relay teams include Hissey, Moen, Anderson, Chris Dietz, Tyler McClendon, Donald Collier, John Holmen, James Steinke, Jeremy Niersmann, Stephanie Malabonga, Claire Armstrong, Katy Snoddy and Lauren Hering.
Each of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor's basketball teams will have an opportunity to complete its five-game homestand with a 4-1 record in tonight's doubleheader against Concordia University at Belton's Mabee Gym.On the men's side, UMHB's Crusaders (10-8) own a 5-2 record in the American Southwest Conference's West Division, tying them for second place with McMurry behind Concordia's 6-1 Tornados (13-5). UMHB beat Concordia 73-68 in Austin Dec. 5 in the teams' ASC West opener. Their game at 7:30 p.m. today shapes up as a clash of arguably the division's best two players in senior forwards Robert Moore of UMHB and K.B. DeBord of Concordia.As for the women, both UMHB and Concordia are 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the ASC West going into today's 5:30 p.m. battle. They and Howard Payne, which fell 72-58 at UMHB Saturday, are tied for second behind 7-0 Hardin-Simmons. The Lady Tornados cruised to a 64-51 win over the Lady Crusaders Dec. 8 in Austin.Only the top two men's and women's teams in each division will qualify for the ASC Tournament in late February. Admission to tonight's games is free.
