Kmart seeks bankruptcy protection

No indications yet on future of Big Kmart store in Temple
No information is available on the status of the local Kmart store after the nationally known retail discounter filed for bankruptcy protection Tuesday to seek shelter from creditors under Chapter 11.Jim Hardwick, general manager of Big Kmart in Temple, was on vacation this week and not available for comment.His assistant manager, Verna Thompson, said that employees at the local level are not authorized to comment on anything.A call to the media relations department for Kmart Stores located in Pontiac, Mich., got a recorded message that said the company does not have any information pertaining to local markets, individual stores or information on closings of stores in any communities.

WASHINGTON (AP) Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi is turning to some of the harshest critics of government research into Gulf War illness to advise the agency on future studies. Principi is forming a panel to help direct research into illnesses experienced by American soldiers who served in the 1990-91 war with Iraq, the VA said Tuesday. Principi was to announce the panel and its appointed members at a news conference Wednesday. The move is another nod by the Bush administration to Gulf War veterans, many of whom accuse the government of dragging its feet in finding a cause and treatment for their mysterious illnesses.
