Temple businessman Bill Jones III announced his candidacy for mayor Tuesday afternoon in the Municipal Building council chambers before more than 50 supporters, including members of his family and city business leaders."Looking at the good things that are happening in Temple, and with the experience we have in our council and professional city staff, I believe that I can definitely make a contribution and help take us to the next level of success and beyond," Jones said, adding, with a smile and glance at his wife, April, "so, if I still have permission, I am today announcing my candidacy for the position of mayor of Temple."Citing the opportunities of the North American Free Trade Agreement and Temple's position on Interstate 35, and the need to promote local schools and grow local businesses, Jones said "these objectives must be done within the framework of a sound strategic plan and sound financial and fiscal policy. by Anna Foster
Dr. James Boyle, Temple school superintendent, received a 5 percent raise from school trustees during Monday's school board meeting and will make $126,000 this year.Boyle, 53, made $120,000 in 2001 and $90,000 in 1997, which was his first year as Temple superintendent."He has done a remarkable job leading the district where we need to go," said John Gauntt, school board president.In addition to the raise, the board extended Boyle's contract through 2004."He originally had a three-year contract and every year the board can pass off or extend on the contract and that contract has been extended annually," Gauntt said.The board uses a four-page evaluation form to gauge the superintendent's performance.It scrutinizes educational leadership, district management, board and community relations and student performance. The board also outlines priorities for the new year and any recommendations of the district.Specifics about Boyle's job performance or any recommendations made by the board were not disclosed.Trustee Mary Nash Walker said Boyle surrounds himself with effective people who perform their jobs well.
