sportsThe Temple Wildcats begin defense of their District 13-5A basketball title tonight. However, after winning only four of their first 20 games this season, how much of a defense they'll put up will depend on several factors."It will be quite a challenge (repeating) with the team we have this year," said Temple coach Bruce Etheridge, whose 4-16 team will begin district play at 7:30 p.m. today at 15-7 Copperas Cove."While we might not have enough experience to compete for another district championship, we're just hoping we can jell in time to make a run at the playoffs."The Wildcats head into district play having lost five straight. The losing skein began prior to last month's Round Rock Sunrise Kiwanis Holiday Classic, when they lost several players to injuries, suspensions and academics.Three consecutive losses in the Round Rock tourney were followed by defeats at Class 4A state-ranked Austin LBJ and Pflugerville Connally. It merely continued a bad dream for Etheridge, whose teams have won 57 games the past two seasons."We're banged up and beat up," Etheridge said. "We're finally get getting some kids healthy, and we're still capable of playing better. by Will Wright
For the Belton High School boys basketball team, the writing isn't on the wall. It's on the Tigers' backs.Namely, it's on the T-shirts they're sporting this season, the ones bearing the phrase "On a Mission: 35 Years in the Making."When 13th-ranked Belton (18-4) begins the District 17-4A season at 8 p.m. today at Killeen Shoemaker (11-10), the Tigers will be gunning for their first outright district title since the 1965-66 season. Belton has shared the title five times since then, the last time coming in 1990.The Tigers, who finished third in 17-4A last season and ended a nine-season playoff drought, have established themselves as the district front-runner with their impressive non-district record. Belton's four losses are to Class 5A teams The Temple High School girls soccer team always starts slowly but picks up steam. In fact, head coach Kevin Korompai plans it that way."I try to schedule tough non-district games to get us ready," he said. "Your pre-district games count on your record, but not for the playoffs. The important thing is, we get better."The Tem-Cats are 0-3-1 heading into their two-day Temple Tournament, which begins today. The Tem-Cats' first game is at 1 p.m. against Wichita Falls at the Korompai Complex.Last season, the Tem-Cats went 5-8 before finishing 6-4 in District 13-5A for second place and their ninth consecutive playoff berth. by Nick Taylor
Young but hungry. That's the theme for this year's Temple High School swim team, which is staging its coming out party on Saturday at its annual Winter Swim Classic at the Hardin Swim Center.First-year coach John Baltzell, an assistant the last five years, believes there's a lot of potential in his Wildcats, who have only two seniors but several returning veterans.Baltzell, 37, takes over for longtime coach Terry Jones, who left this past summer to inaugurate the swim program at Class 4A Magnolia. Having spawned from a good program at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, a perennial contender for NCAA Division III national honors, the new coach believes he can pass on his love of competition to his students."I like coaching because I've been doing it forever, but as a collegiate swimmer I enjoyed it so much," Baltzell said. "I just want to bring the same concept of the joy of competition to the kids."The leaders on the team are its two returning regional competitors | |
