Wildcats sting Ellison, 56-52

Once again, the 11th-ranked Temple boys basketball team found itself teetering on the brink Friday night.Plagued by cold second-quarter shooting and far from full strength, the Wildcats trailed Killeen Ellison by seven points early and again by a point late in the fourth quarter. In other words, they were right in their element.Putting together another heart-stopping rally in yet another tight affair, the Wildcats hit eight straight free throws and came up with the key defensive stops to produce an emotional 56-52 victory over Ellison in front of a capacity crowd on Parents Night at Wildcat Gym.With the victory, Temple (26-4) improved its record to 8-1 in District 13-5A and clinched at least a share of the loop crown.A Temple win at Killeen on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. or a Georgetown loss at Ellison would give the Wildcats the title outright. Georgetown (28-4, 7-2) remained one game behind Temple in the standings by virtue of its 80-64 win over Waco on Friday."This is extremely special to see our seniors go up on the ladder and cut the net down," Temple coach Bruce Etheridge said. "There has been so much sweat and effort put into us getting to this point. I think of all the players that have come through our program and tonight's victory is truly a representation of their efforts."We've had some struggles in the past in our program, but we stayed steadfast and believed in what we were doing. And now its all coming together and my hat's off to these seniors that have helped make it come true." by Tom Day
