sportsFive down, five to go. Halfway through its 10-game quest for the District 13-5A championship, the Temple boys basketball team is right on schedule. The 23-3 Wildcats not only extended their winning streak to eight games in a 65-56 win over Killeen last Friday, but they also improved to 5-0 in loop play to maintain sole possession of first place. And as they head into the second half of the district schedule, their stock continues to rise. The Wildcats jumped up a spot to No. 7 in the latest Class 5A state rankings released Sunday by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. They'll carry that ranking and the same lofty expectations to Copperas Cove today for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Bulldogs (19-9, 1-4). by Tom Day
Surging Mary Hardin-Baylor will meet struggling Concordia tonight in an American Southwest Conference college basketball doubleheader in Austin. With a win, UMHB's men (10-7 overall, 7-4 in the ASC's West Division) at 7:30 p.m. would end their five-game road trip at 4-1 and retain second place in the ASC West. A victory by the UMHB women (11-6, 8-3 ASC West) at 5:30 p.m. would be their third straight after an 0-2 start on the lengthy road swing. If the Lady Crusaders beat Concordia (6-11, 4-7) and division leader Hardin-Simmons (13-4, 9-2) defeats McMurry (9-8, 8-3) tonight, UMHB would take over sole possession of second place. If the Lady Crusaders and McMurry both win, there would be a three-way tie atop the division standings. by Greg Wille
