A gray cat caused havoc on Friday when it climbed up an electric power-line pole in an alley between 29th and 31st streets in Temple and refused to come down. "My girlfriend was outside hanging laundry when she heard a cat howling," said Steve Aragon. The cat ran up the pole to get away from neighborhood dogs, according to Aragon. Aragon called 911 to get someone to come out and rescue the stranded animal, but was informed there was no one available. As the day went on more neighbors became involved in trying to rescue the stranded cat. Several hours later, the Temple Fire Department arrived to aid in rescuing the cat. sportsIt was pretty obvious that the eighth-ranked Temple boys basketball team wasn't exactly on top of its game early in its contest with Killeen on Friday. With the Kangaroos controlling the boards and repeatedly exposing their opponent's defense in transition and in the paint, Temple fell into an early 10-point hole. But the resilient Wildcats hung around. And as they had in their four previous district contests, they did what they had to do to pull out another win. Matt Williams tallied 25 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals as the Wildcats rallied and eventually pulled away to a 65-56 victory at Wildcat Gym. Travis Levie hit a pair of 3-pointers and seven free throws in the final 2:11 to help put the game on ice for Temple (23-3, 5-0 in District 13-5A). Marcus Venus overcame early foul trouble to drop in 20 points and Alex Prunty added 18 for Killeen (14-12, 2-3). by Tom Day
Will the stakes be high in tonight's basketball doubleheader in Plano between Temple College and Collin County Community College? You bet. Among the four teams that will take the floor at Express Hall, only the Collin women might consider their 5 p.m. date with TC just another game on the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference schedule. The Lady Express is struggling at 3-16 overall and 1-6 in the NTJCAC, and even a big comeback in the second half of conference play likely won't get it into postseason play. For Collin's men and TC's men and women, however, it's a much different story. The Lady Leopards (9-11, 2-4) Going into today's 1 p.m. District 13-5A swim meet finals, lack of confidence and momentum will not be a problem for Temple's boys and girls squads. Of the 24 events, Temple posted the fastest qualifiers in 11 trials Friday night in the preliminaries at the Hardin Swim Center. Temple's toughest opponent, Georgetown had 10 and Killeen tallied three. The top eight swimmers in each event qualified for today's finals. The top six will advance to the Region II finals Feb. 9-10 at the University of Texas in Austin. "We told all of our swimmers that you swim for place today. You swim for points tomorrow," Temple swim coach Terry Jones said. "We paced ourselves well tonight. We made sure we got where we needed to be." While Temple had more top qualifiers, Georgetown dominated the relays, by posting top times in four of the five events. The Temple boys claimed the top time in the 200 freestyle relay while Georgetown took the girls and boys 200 medleys and girls 400 freestyle. by Robert Hollier
