sportsWhile it might not have been a season to cherish, the Temple Wildcats will celebrate their 2000 football season tonight at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. The banquet, catered by Al's Bar-B-Q Barn, will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the high school athletic office until 2 p.m., and later at the door of the Mayborn Center. The Temple Quarterback Club, is sponsoring the event, which will feature former NFL great and Milam County resident Jack Pardee as its featured speaker. Several team awards will be presented, such as the Quarterback Club's George Johnson Scholarship, along with a video memento of the Wildcats' 3-7 season, their first under head coach David Beal.
Both University of Mary Hardin-Baylor basketball teams are tied for second place in the American Southwest Conference's West Division. Sul Ross State's squads sport less-than-impressive records. So it follows that the Crusaders and Lady Crusaders are expected win easily tonight in the teams' twinbill in Alpine. What will actually happen, though, is anyone's guess, because neither UMHB squad brings a tremendous amount of momentum into today's games. Coach Ken DeWeese's Crusaders (8-7 overall, 5-4 in the ASC West), who will battle Sul Ross (3-12, 2-7) at 7:30 p.m., bagged a 105-79 win at Hardin-Simmons a week ago but then got hammered 122-93 at division-leading McMurry on Saturday. It's a similar story for Coach Margie Williamson's Lady Crusaders (9-6 overall, 6-3 in the ASC West), who'll play Sul Ross (5-9, 3-6) at 5:30 p.m. by Greg Wille
