Six railroad cars owned by the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad derailed Sunday morning in the railyard north of the Adams Avenue overpass in Temple. The cars derailed at about 11 a.m. Sunday when a rail snapped in half during the movement of cars, said a Temple Police Department spokeswoman. No one was injured, she said, nor was there any hazardous spillage. It was in this same railyard in August 1999 that a toxic chemical leaked from a tank car and caused evacuation of the surrounding area.At least three of the cars derailed Sunday were loaded with auto parts headed for Mexico, said a railroad employee at the site. Another car contained about 16,000 gallons of caustic soda, and at least one car held coal. The contents of the coal car did not spill, and the car itself was leaning on its side but was not flipped over.Because the accident happened in the railyard below the overpass, normal street traffic was not affected.Railroad employees were at the site late Sunday afternoon with cranes and other equipment to set the cars upright.Righting the cars was to be completed Sunday, with fixing of the broken rail to follow, said the railroad worker.
