What does kindness look like? What is nonviolence? Why is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so important to our society? Students at Scott Elementary are pondering, discussing and acting upon these question as the result of a national organization to network young people into sharing proactive action in the communities, schools and homes. sportsFor five weeks last fall, the six District 13-5A football teams engaged in tooth-and-nail battles that featured tough-as-nails players.The loop's competitive strength and individual talent was realized Saturday, as a dozen of its players made the 51st annual Texas Sports Writers Association/Collin Street Bakery Class 5A All-State teams.Included were Temple's DeWayne Brandon and Dominique Steamer, five from Copperas Cove and three from Waco High and two from Killeen Ellison.Statewide, Midland Lee running back Cedric Benson, who rushed for 2,871 yards and 43 touchdowns, was named as the Offensive Player of the Year. Pressure was the prominent theme on Saturday afternoon at TC Gym in Temple College's basketball doubleheader against Cisco Junior College.The Lady Leopards were under significant pressure to get a win, facing what amounted to a do-or-die situation against Cisco, one of their chief rivals for one of the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference's four berths in the NJCAA Region V Tournament.And TC didn't get it done, playing perhaps its worst conference game of the season and allowing the Lady Wranglers to leave town with a crucial 79-63 victory.Cisco's men's squad delivered a spirited performance as well, but the Leopards Watching all the inauguration stuff on the tube Saturday brought to mind my encounters with an affable guy who yesterday became president of the United States.While at the Port Arthur News in July 1991, I went to Dallas to report the happenings at coaching school. But I couldn't miss the Texas Rangers' game against Detroit at Arlington Stadium.Getting to the ballpark hours before the night game, two people were in the press box Former NFL great and Milam County resident Jack Pardee will be the featured speaker at the Temple Wildcats' annual football banquet on Thursday at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center.The banquet will begin at 7 p.m. and will be catered by Al's Bar-B-Q Barn. Tickets are $10 and are available at the athletic office at Temple High.Several team awards will be presented, as well as the George Johnson Scholarships, which are given by the Temple Quarterback Club, the sponsor of the banquet.Pardee, an All-America linebacker at Texas A&M, was selected twice to the Pro Bowl, with the Los Angeles Rams in 1963 and the Washington Redskins in 1971.His final game was Super Bowl VII in 1973, which the Redskins lost 14-7 to Miami. Pardee turned in an outstanding defensive performance, making 11 tackles. | |
