sportsFlorida State football coach Bobby Bowden has won two national championships and more than 300 games in his legendary career, but those totals likely would be higher if not for the Seminoles' sometimes-suspect kicking game. Bowden might have captured national titles in 1991 and '92 had FSU kickers not shanked late field goals (you know, Wide Right I and II) in losses to perennial enemy Miami. Ol' Bobby sure could have used a guy with a dependable leg Fans and followers of the Temple boys basketball team recognize point guard David President and post Matt Williams as the program's cornerstone athletes. As two- and three-year varsity starters, respectively, President and Williams have been the driving forces behind Temple's recent re-emergence as a state power. Their combined leadership abilities, the statistics they've posted and the accolades earned during their careers have attested to that. But what some outsiders may not know about this Wildcat duo has perhaps been the biggest factor in the success of the team, which has jumped out to a 2-0 start in District 13-5A play and is 20-3 overall. "Matt and David are very tight off the court and have developed a strong friendship, which is probably more important to them than their relationship on the court," said Temple coach Bruce Etheridge, whose Wildcats travel to Waco for a 7:30 p.m. game today. "They're special kids." As team captains and experienced leaders, Williams and President have helped instill a confidence among the Wildcats that has spelled out to their No. 12 ranking in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' Class 5A poll. by Tom Day
The Gatesville Hornets ran roughshod over their football competition last fall en route to a state championship. On Thursday, those who helped get them there got their due. The Division I titleist Hornets placed five players on the 51st Annual Texas Sports Writers Association/Collin Street Bakery Class 3A All-State football teams released Thursday. After capping his stellar career by rushing for 2,953 yards with 31 touchdowns, senior running back Taurean Henderson was named as the 3A Offensive Player of the Year. Kiff Hardin, who needed only four years in transforming Gatesville from a loser into a state champ, was the pick for Coach of the Year. Cameron had four selections to the TSWA's three elite teams, and Troy had two. Division II champ LaGrange totaled seven players and Marlin six, led by linebacker Jimmie Quinn, who was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Year. by Will Wright
