sportsWhen No. 9 Georgetown backed the 12th-ranked Temple boys basketball team into a corner early in their contest Tuesday night, it seemed the dam was about to break in on the frustrated Wildcats. But an early 11-point deficit and the game-long foul trouble of star post Matt Williams only served to unite the Wildcats, who embraced their latest test of mettle with gritty play and clutch individual performances. Temple forced a key defensive steal and used a lay-up by David President and a free throw by Dominique Steamer with 8.5 seconds remaining to pull out a wild, emotional 59-56 win over the Eagles at Wildcat Gym. "I had missed two free throws earlier and knew I had to make it up somehow," Steamer said. "I got another chance and it was a relief to hit that free throw to give us some breathing room. "It was neat to have everyone in the crowd yelling my name. It was great experience. Someone had to step up. Matt, David and Travis (Levie) usually do that, but everyone helped out tonight." Playing defense is never a bad thing. However, playing too much of it can be. The Temple girls soccer team learned that lesson Tuesday night, as the Tem-Cats fell to the Round Rock Stony Point Tigers 4-0 at a muddy Woodson Field. The Tigers controlled the game, especially the territorial battle. And that field-position advantage proved critical, especially in the second half with the Tem-Cats (2-5) trailing by a goal and fighting for the equalizer. "We were playing decently well, but we were definitely defensive, especially throughout the second half," Temple coach Kevin Korompai said. "We just had troubles getting it out of our half of the field." The Tem-Cats trailed 1-0 at the half and had their best scoring chance 15 minutes into the second half. Forward Megan Richardson raced with the ball down the left side of the field and bore in on Stony Point goalie Erin Stigler. However, Richardson's shot from just outside the left post was gobbled up by Stigler. A few minutes later, Stony Point's Kayla Chalman gave the Tigers the breathing room they needed. She beat Temple goalie Kristin Foulks with an overhead shot from the edge of the penalty area that went just inside the left post. Jill Freidel then scored two goals in the final 15 minutes to ice the game for the Tigers. By Greg Rajan | |
