For most of the swimmers and divers competing at Saturday's sixth annual Wildcat Winter Classic, the meet gave them one last chance to let loose before the stakes go up in two weeks with district competition. And let loose they did. "It keeps it from being too serious and it lets you have fun," Temple's Drew Elwood said. "After this, it gets serious and it's elimination. At this meet, you let yourself go and have fun with it." Elwood had his share of fun at the Hardin Swim Center, taking first place in the boys 500 yard freestyle. Other Wildcat swimmers who took first in their races were Jeff Moltenberry (200 free) and Traci Westphal (50 free). For Temple coach Terry Jones, the meet was his last chance to see his charges compete before the Jan. 26-27 District 13-5A meet, which is also at Hardin. Jones liked what he saw Saturday. "There were some (things) that I was really pleased with," he said. "I saw kids step up and accomplish some things we need them to down the stretch. But there's a lot of things technique-wise that we can improve on. I think we got everything we wanted out of it. "The nice thing about this meet is it has the prelim-finals (format), but it doesn't have the pressure. I think a lot of kids relaxed. It is a good situation. It's fun and I think all the kids come here and have a good time and our kids look forward to it." By Greg Rajan
I've got to admit I like this scenario for Super Bowl XXXV: the Baltimore Ravens' superb defense trying to stop the ever-explosive Minnesota Vikings offense. You can read all of the breakdowns on the conference championship teams in stories throughout the section, so there's no need repeating the all the intangibles and stats here. The Vikings are slight favorites to beat the host Giants, while the Ravens are one-touchdown underdogs to pull off the upset at Oakland. However, a few tidbits are worth mentioning. Such as the fact that Ravens owner Art Modell has never had one of his teams get to the Big One. The way he treated Cleveland, do you think he ever deserves to? I say forgive and forget, but then again, I don't live near Lake Erie. How about that a win over the Giants today would put Minnesota in pro football's giant finale for a fifth time? And, 30 years after their first appearance, the Vikings would be seeking their first win. By Will Wright | |
