In 1995, the VA Hospitals in Temple, Waco, and Marlin were formally integrated and together are called the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS). As an integrated system, CTVHCS is one of the largest VA healthcare systems in the United States, with one of the newest VA medical/surgical hospitals, one of the largest VA psychiatric facilities and one of the largest residential/rehabilitation facilities. The medical/surgical hospital in Temple was opened in 1998 and is a modern, state-of-the-art facility with the latest in medical and computer technology. It has specialists in every area plus its own dental department. Additionally, it is a major teaching hospital where medical residents from Texas A&M, College of Medicine, spend their last two years of residency. The Temple facility will also soon be the site of a world-class Cardiovascular Research Facility, which is expected to open in 2003. This facility has already attracted world-class researchers to the Central Texas area and hopes to attract even more researchers who will one day find the causes, and the cures, for cardiovascular disease. The facility in Waco is well known for it's psychiatric care and also has one of the few VA Blind Rehabilitation Centers in the country. The facility in Marlin houses one of two nursing home care units belonging to CTVHCS. CTVHCS covers a 32 county area in Central Texas, saw nearly 600,000 outpatient visits last year, has nearly 3,000 employees and an annual budget of over $240 million. In addition to the facilities in Temple, Waco, and Marlin, CTVHCS also has outpatient clinics in Austin, Brownwood, Bryan/College Station, and Palestine. Numerous rewarding and challenging nursing opportunities exist within CTVHCS.
